Anthony teen dies after accidental shooting

LAS CRUCES — A 15-year-old Anthony boy died Tuesday night after accidentally shooting himself in the head earlier in the day.

Doña Ana sheriff’s investigator Robert Hernandez said the teen was at his home in the 700 block of First Street about 3 p.m. and was showing off the handgun to friends when it fired.

The teen, who lived in the 700 block of First Street in Anthony, N.M., was airlifted to Thomason Hospital in El Paso, where he was pronounced dead.

It was unclear who owned the gun.

Hernandez said the case was still under investigation but it was unlikely anyone would be charged in relation to the shooting.

"It looks to be a negligent, accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound," he said.

Horse shot twice in head, DASO looking for owner

LAS CRUCES — Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigators are looking for the owner of a horse that wandered into a Radium Springs area yard Monday morning with two gunshot wounds to the head.

Investigator Bo Nevarez reported the mare was found in a yard in the 1800 block of County Road B61, the De Beers Road area in Radium Springs around 9 a.m.

The mare is being treated at the Humane Society for the gunshot wounds. The horse is sedated and in stable condition.

Sheriff’s officials are trying to locate the owner of the horse or someone willing to foster the animal until the owner can be located.

An investigation has been opened into the shooting.

Anyone with information or who could foster the horse is asked to call Nevarez at (575) 525-8806.

Uncooperative man shot in leg in apparent drive-by

LAS CRUCES — A Las Cruces man was shot in the leg late Wednesday afternoon in what Las Cruces police believe was a drive-by shooting.

The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 5000 block of Mesa Drive, on the city’s East Mesa. A police investigation was being hampered by the victim’s reluctance to share any information about the incident.

Officer Wallace Downs, spokesman for the Las Cruces Police Department, said the man drove himself to MountainView Regional Medical Center after being shot. His injuries did not appear to be life threatening.

As he awaited medical treatment, the victim was uncooperative in answering police questions.

Witnesses told police they saw an older model 2-door brown sedan driving away rapidly moments after the shooting.

Man who allegedly killed wife has died

LAS CRUCES — An elderly Picacho Hills man who allegedly shot and killed his wife on March 28, but was not charged, has died, District Attorney Susana Martinez said.

Drew Waldron, 87, died of Alzheimer’s disease at a secure medical facility. Martinez said Waldron’s familly notified her May 26 of the man’s passing.

Waldron’s wife, Theria Waldron, also 87, was shot once in the head with a handgun. Her body was found in the master bedroom of the couple’s upscale home on Villa Chiquita, west of Las Cruces.

Martinez has said her decision not to charge Waldron was based on his mental-health history, which was obtained by prosecutors with the consent of family members. She said Waldron could not "form the intent necessary to be charged with a crime."

The day of the shooting, Waldron was seen by employees of a nearby convenience store. They reported to sheriff’s deputies that he appeared confused. Responding officers said Waldron reported that his wife was missing and when they accompanied him home, deputies found the woman’s body.

Martinez has said Waldron did not remember shooting his wife.

And on and on it goes. However, this is all poppycock compared to the war going on just a few miles south in in Cuidad Juárez, Mexico. Latest story:

Juárez is dealing with about 450 homicides so far this year believed to be linked to a war among drug traffickers.

On Tuesday, state investigators identified a girl shot and killed Monday evening as 12-year-old Alexa Belem Moreno Melendez. She was shot in the head while riding in the back seat of a black Chevrolet Tahoe with Chihuahua plates that was strafed with gunfire. No one else in the vehicle was killed.

The girl’s death was possibly referred to on a banner found hanging from a bridge Tuesday morning threatening revenge on hit men it called "mata inocentes" (killers of innocents).

At 10 p.m. Monday, two men were gunned down near a pool table in the Mavis bar, raising to eight the number of homicides that day.

By Tuesday evening, only one death had been reported, that of a man wrapped in bandages dumped in an alley, news reports said.
